About the group
The Experimental Planetology research group, led by Prof. Paolo Sossi, seeks to understand how planets form and evolve, both in our Solar System and beyond.
Our mission is to place constraints on the large-scale processes that lead to planet formation and that characterise their subsequent evolution by devising novel experiments, analytical methods for natural samples, and theoretical modelling approaches. In particular, the group focuses on the accretion and differentiation of the inner planets; Mercury, Venus, Earth (and its Moon), and Mars, as well as on predicting the expected diversity in compositions of rocky exoplanets and developing methods for their verification through observations.
The offices and laboratories of the Experimental Planetology group are located on ETH Zurich's Zentrum campus. We are part of the Institute of Geochemistry and Petrology within the Department of Earth Sciences and are affiliated with external pageNCCR PlanetScall_made, the Center for the Origin and Prevalence of Life, the external pageInSight missioncall_made, and the external pageLIFE space missioncall_made.
